Healthy relationships at work can be the make-or-break in career success.

I've had some incredible support through the years.

I've always associated Johannesburg with work. After spending years traveling for projects and visits to the mother ship, landing at OR Tambo meant bracing for meetings and clients.

This time around was different.

My schedule was packed, as always, but this time with friends and people I wanted to see. Looking at who I'd chosen to spend time with, they were almost all work friends, and mostly people I'd known for more than 20 years. I wouldn't be where I am today without the support of these incredible human beings. There have been marriages and kids, death and grieving, differences in city and country locations. We go through months and (sometimes) years of no contact, yet when we do see each other, we seem to pick up where we left off.

We often underestimate the value of healthy relationships at work. The people around us form a support network, helping us feel seen and heard when work gets stressful. They can't necessarily solve all the challenges, but they can help us feel less alone, which counts for more than you may think.

If you're feeling isolated at work and don't feel like it's a safe environment to speak about challenges or ask for help, take a look at the relationships with the people around you. If they're not supportive and psychologically safe, it may be time to re-evaluate and take some action.
